Ultimate therapy... more like the ultimate bad idea

When I began reading the article "Ultimate Therapy: Commercial Eugenics in the 21st Century," I should have known it was something I would highly disagree with. There are few things that I can say I truly 100% stand by, unwavering to persuasion and debate, but human originality is definitely one of them. I have always believed that people should embrace who they are, loved for not only their outer appearance but for their inner beauty. If a woman becomes pregnant with a child she knows will inherit Downs Syndrome, is it really that bad if she decides to keep the baby? I feel like there is a reason behind everything and if the child were to be born disabled there is a reason for it. Sure, it sounds like a good idea. I am not arguing that genetic engineering technology is completely a bad thing- it's great that in future years we will have a resource to combat against disease and accelerate the natural healing process. However, I am saying that, this is my personal belief; to alter an embryo could be viewed as morally wrong. We should love our children no matter what...right? I feel it's not right to alter that "person" for what they were about to become. It's similar to the research behind being able to pick what sex your baby is, by giving it a specific shot in the early stages of development. I feel we shouldn't do it. Why should our generation be able to create all these perfect humans; creatures that soon become clones, because most will want the perfect child. I don't see the need to "improve" anything with the human race today. We can learn so much about our brains and bodies by disabilities, by challenges. As far as curing diseases and healing the mute, genetic engineering research may become a great advancement in our world.

  1. I completley agree with you that everything happens for a reason. Your example of if a child is born with Downs Syndrome is an excellent one. I agree that there is a reason for it. Also, I don't agree with altering the sex of a baby before it is born. That is unnatural and as you said why should we try to make perfect humans? Lastly, I agree that our human race is fine the way it is. By trying to improve it, I feel will only make matters worse.

I beleive also in what everything you said as well . And I agree with megan with the whole picking your sex before it is born. Seriously like why would you want to do that God , or however anyone believes in how your childs goanna be even before you are born. I just feel like everything happens for a reason and dont try to make your baby someone different even before its born . Good job though :)
